Upstate Heads to Wofford on Saturday for Terrier Relays

Spartanburg, S.C.  – The USC Upstate track and field team is sending a total of seven athletes to the Terrier Relays this Saturday hosted by Wofford College at Spartanburg High School.

The Terrier Relays begin at 8:15 a.m. Saturday morning with the women's hammer throw and goes until 5:30 p.m. with the women's 4x400-meter relay. The first track event of the day starts at 10:30 a.m. with the men's 3000-meter steeplechase.

Matt Johnson will be the only Spartan participating in multiple events on Saturday as he is scheduled to run in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dash. Johnson is one of four Upstate men that will be competing in the Terrier Relays along with Theodore Kountourogiannis, Andrew Kipchumba and Spencer Nieto. Kountourogiannis, Kipchumba and Nieto are all running in the 1500-meter run event.

On the women's side, the Spartans are represented by Rebecca Elliott, Erin Gethin and Kierstin Williams. Elliott is set to compete in the 400-meter hurdles, while Gethin will be taking part in the 3000-meter steeplechase and Williams the hammer throw.

Upstate competed last weekend at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C., and saw Alexis Jacobs break two of her own school records in the shot put and discus throw. Brittany Walls also tied her school record in the high jump. Jasmine Polite led the Spartans with a 3rd place finish in section D of the 5000-meter run and Michael Smith added a 6th place performance in the triple jump invitational.

Upstate travels to Rock Hill next Thursday for the Carolina Cup hosted by Winthrop University.
