Johnson Qualifies for 100-Meter Final during Second Day of 49er Classic

Charlotte, N.C. – Brenicke Johnson qualified for the 100-meter dash final while two Spartans broke school records as USC Upstate opened competition at the 49er Classic Friday from the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center.

Johnson finished seventh in the 100-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 11.95 to earn a spot in tomorrow's final. The final of the 100-meter dash is scheduled to take place around 12:50 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.

Along with the qualifying time by Johnson, KeAndrea Ladson and Alexis Jacobs both set school records on Friday in the 100-meter hurdles and discus throw. Ladson broke her own school record in the 100-meter hurdles as her personal-best time of 15.24 surpassed her mark set last week at the CCU Invitational. Jacobs had a personal-best throw of 39.11-meters (128-04) in the discus to break the previous record also set last week in Myrtle Beach by Brittany Walls.

Ladson and Jacobs were two of 15 Upstate athletes to achieve new personal-bests on Friday. The Spartan women had nine athletes record personal-best marks while the men had six.  Walls led Upstate with two personal-bests in the 100-meter hurdles (15.48) and 200-meter dash preliminaries (24.46).

The Spartan women also had personal-bests recorded by Molly Bliss (1500-meter run), Jasmine Polite (5000-meter run), Danielle Horneff (5000-meter run), Destinie Sykes (100-meter hurdles), Draneisha Griffin (long jump) and Kierstin Williams (hammer throw). On the men's side, Rashaude Gibbs (100-meter dash), Ross Oden (5000-meter run), Cameron Pratt (110-meter hurdles), Kyle Jones (400-meter hurdles), Cody Ellison (5000-meter run) and Michael Smith (long jump) each picked up new personal-bests.

Polite posted a ninth-place finish in 5000-meter run following her time of 17:36.88. Erin Gethin ran a 12:31.83 in the 3000-meter steeplechase to garner a 10th place finish.

The final day of the 49er Classic begins at 10 a.m. Saturday morning with the men's shot put and goes until 4:30 p.m. with the men's 4x400-meter relay.
