Spartans Battle Strong Field, Conditions at Catamount Classic

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Despite having to battle rain and cold weather, the USC Upstate track and field team still turned in several strong performances on Saturday at the Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic.

"Our teams performed well today considering the conditions," said associate head coach Carson Blackwelder.  "We competed against some quality teams and we able to place in the top three a few times today."

Perrish Goggins claimed first place in the high jump after clearing a height of 6-04.75 (1.95m).  In the men's 800-meter dash, Matt Johnson finished second with a time of 1:56.13.  Cameron Thomas finished third (1:57.73), while Andrew Kipchumba finished fifth (2:00.02).

The men's 4x400 relay team of Cameron Thomas, Joshua Powers, Michael Johnson and Michael Meissner finished second after a time of 3:22.76.

Davey Dennison finished second in the 1,500-meter run after posting a time of 4:05.92.  Joey Daversa (4:10.61) finished fifth, with Kipchumba coming in sixth (4:11.77).

Eric Chapman finished third-overall in the hammer throw on Saturday.  Chapman recorded a throw of 156-06 (47.70m).

Ashley Edmond finished fifth in the 200-meter dash after posting a time of 26.32, finishing less than a second out of the top three.  Edmond finished seventh in the 400-meter dash (1:01.08) and again was less than a second out of the top three.
