Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate Athletics Department held its annual The Sparty's Awards Banquet presented by Coca-Cola on Monday evening to celebrate the accomplishments of the department and its student-athletes in 2018-19. Abbie Ellis (women's soccer), Brittany Case (softball) and Cam Philpot (men's soccer) received the night's highest honor in being named the Coca-Cola Student-Athletes of the Year.

In addition to the Student-Athlete of the Year awards, USC Upstate honored career achievements with the Dr. Joe Bowman Pinnacle Award. Case, Christina Biggerstaff (softball), Tanner Saunders (men's track and field), Dorian Jones (men's cross country/track and field) and Madison Haake (volleyball) were honored for career excellence as members of their respective programs.

Ellis broke five different school records this past season. She recorded 33 points highlighted by 15 goals. The Second Team All-Big South performer broke the school record for goals in a season, game-winning goals, shot attempts and penalty kicks as the women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the Big South Women's Soccer Championship in the program's first-ever postseason appearance at the Division I level. She led the Big South in both points and goals scored. Ellis also ranked in the top-25 nationally in game-winning goals, goals per game, points per game, goals and points.

Case has been a staple in left field this season for the softball team. She currently serves as the President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee helping with programs including Miracle League, Jesse Bobo, donations for the SNAC Pantry and sponsoring the McCarthy Teszler Prom. On the field, she ranks second on the team with a .392 batting average, six home runs and 43 RBI. The senior sits second in the Big South in hitting and leads the conference in doubles. She reached base in a team-leading 26 straight games. Earlier this season, she became just the 11th player in school history, and fifth in the Division I era, to record 200 career hits.

Philpot was a Big South Second Team All-Conference performer and All-Academic Team honoree this season on the men's soccer team. He was selected to the United Soccer Coaches Men's Scholar All-South Region Team. He led the team in scoring with 14 points on six goals and two assists. He recorded two game-winning goals against UNC Asheville and Winthrop. The senior ranked seventh or better in the conference in shots, shots per game, points and goals. In conference play, he was tied for first in points and second in goals. He tallied two multi-goal games at Winthrop and Longwood while dishing out assists versus Presbyterian College and Radford.
