Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate head volleyball coach Jennifer Calloway has announced today that the Spartans will play 30 games, including seven inside the Hodge Center, for the upcoming 2014 campaign.
"This year we will embrace a young team, carrying only underclassmen," said Calloway, who is entering her 19th season at the helm of the Spartan volleyball program. "In planning our non-conference schedule we look to take on many challenging opponents knowing that it will allow us to take a deeper look inside as to our individual and team improvement."
Upstate begins the season with four straight tournaments on the road with three taking place in the state of South Carolina. The four tournaments to kick off the year will be held at Clemson (Aug. 29-30), Liberty (Sept. 5-6), Charleston Southern (Sept. 12-13) and Wofford (Sept. 19-20). The Spartans follow the tournaments with a trip down to Clinton, S.C. Sept. 23 to take on Presbyterian College.
Upstate opens its home schedule and Atlantic Sun play Sept. 27 versus Kennesaw State before wrapping up non-conference competition in Rock Hill, S.C. against Winthrop Sept. 30.
The Spartans follow with four straight home matches against A-Sun opponents to start October. Upstate will host Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky Oct. 3-4, and Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson Oct. 10-11. The Spartans then hit the road for three consecutive matches against defending A-Sun champion Jacksonville (Oct. 17), North Florida (Oct. 18) and Kennesaw State (Oct. 25).
Upstate returns to the Hodge Center the next weekend to conclude its home season with two matches against North Florida (Oct. 31) and Jacksonville (Nov. 1).
The Spartans finish the 2014 season with four road matches beginning Nov. 8 at Florida Gulf Coast. Upstate will then travel up to Stetson for a match on Nov. 9. The Spartans conclude the season Nov. 14-15 as they face Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky.
"Building a schedule to allow us to compete well in the Atlantic Sun is our goal," Calloway added. "Striving to break new ground in the conference and winning a championship is always in the forefront of your mind, with that next step being the NCAA Tournament."
The 2014 Atlantic Sun Volleyball Tournament will be held Nov. 20-22 in Fort Myers, Fla., and is being hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University.
