Spartanburg, S.C. – Four Spartans registered double-digit kills Saturday afternoon as USC Upstate dropped a 3-1 decision to the Lipscomb Lady Bisons at the Hodge Center.
Kayla Eversgerd led all Upstate players with 17 kills, and was joined by Shannon Weiss' 12, Emily Koelling with 11 and Alexa Lagaly's 10. Eversgerd and Lagaly each finished with double-doubles. Lexi Gober added 43 assists and Morgan Page finished with a team-high 25 digs.
Lipscomb won the match by scores of 25-17, 25-21, 22-25 and 25-17.
The Lady Bisons opened the match by taking the first set 25-17. The two teams split the opening eight points and sat tied at 4-4 after Eversgerd's attack error. Lipscomb posted an 8-2 run to lead 12-6 forcing the Spartans to call a timeout. Upstate rallied to cut its deficit to 13-10 following Sophie Kellerman's attack error. Kellerman quickly put the Lady Bisons back ahead 15-10, but the Spartans fought back to trail by just three at 17-14. Lipscomb broke the frame open with a 5-1 run to increase its lead to 22-15, and went on for the set victory.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle as it featured 12 ties and four lead changes. In the opening 18 points, the set was tied six different times. The Lady Bisons led by as many as two points, 8-6, to open the set, but Upstate responded each time to tie the frame. The Spartans took a 12-9 lead on Gober's kill. Lipscomb answered with a 5-2 run to tie the set 14-14, and then answered to keep the score equal three separate times. After Molly Sptiznagle made the score 19-19, the Lady Bisons end the set on a 6-2 run to win 25-21.
The third set was just as exciting as the second highlighted by 16 ties. Upstate would go on to win the set 25-22. The opening points contained nine ties as Lipscomb held the largest lead at 7-5 following Amanda Carroll's attack error. Upstate evened the set at 14-14 and then took a 16-14 lead on a kill by Gober. The Spartans never led by more than two points for a majority of the set and stayed true up until the very end. After Sptiznagle evened the frame at 22-22, Upstate captured the final three points capped off by Weiss' kill en route to the set victory.
The Lady Bisons scored six of the first eight points to open the fourth set and led 6-2 on Lauren Ford's kill. Lipscomb maintained a three-point cushion, until midway through the set, opened things up with a 9-3 run to lead 20-11. The Spartans trimmed the deficit to six, 22-16, but the Lady Bison took the set, and match, by recording three of the final four points to win 25-17.
