Upstate Drops Three-Set Decision to Stetson
Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate sophomore outside hitter Kayla Eversgerd recorded her third straight double-double Saturday afternoon, but the Spartans would fall 3-0 to the Stetson Hatters in Atlantic Sun action at the G.B. Hodge Center.
Upstate's record drops to 1-15 on the season and 1-6 in league play, while the Hatters improve their record to 14-8 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
With the double-double, Eversgerd now has five in her last seven matches and nine overall. She paced the Spartan attack with a team-high 18 kills and 13 digs. Senior libero Morgan Page, following her career-high 33 dig performance Friday, added 12 to the effort. Sophomore setter Lexi Gober also contributed 27 assists.
Upstate split the opening six points of the first set and saw Gober tie the frame at 3-3 following her kill. The Spartans marched out to their largest lead of the set, 12-5, after a service ace by Gober, and back-to-back kills from Eversgerd and sophomore middle blocker Javon Gates. Sophomore right side Shannon Weiss gave Upstate a 16-10 lead midway through the set, and the Spartans maintained their advantage late at 22-19. Stetson, however, forced the set into extra points after tying the frame at 25-25 on Erika White's kill. The Hatters would capture the set 27-25 following two straight attack errors by Eversgerd.
Stetson led throughout in the second set en route to a 25-18 victory. The Hatters scored the first three points of the set and extended their lead to 10-6 after a kill from Kaley Melville. Three straight service aces by Kayla Weller capped off a 7-4 Stetson run as it pushed its lead to 17-10. A service ace by Alexa Drost gave the Hatters their largest lead of the set, 21-13, and would be won on Tiffany Creamer's kill.
Seven of the first eight points of the third set were scored by Stetson and led 7-1 on Melville's kill. Upstate fought back and closed the gap to 12-9 on Eversgerd's kill. The Hatters responded with a 6-1 run to increase their lead to 18-10 following a kill by Abby Boll. Stetson would capture the set, and match, 25-18 on Cailyn Prewitt's kill.
Melville posted a double-double for the Hatters with a team-high 14 kills to go with 12 digs.
The Spartans wrap up their three-game home stand Tuesday evening when they host the Mercer Bears at 6 p.m.
