Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team will take to the court Friday afternoon to play its season opener against Boston College at 2:00 p.m. as part of the Western Carolina Invitational in Cullowhee, N.C.
The two-day tournament will pit Upstate against BC on Friday before the Spartans take on Western Carolina and Wright State Saturday afternoon at 12:00 and 5:00 in the opening weekend of the season. All three matches will feature live statistical updates and video with links on upstatespartans.com and catamountsports.com.
Upstate is coming off its best season on the Division I level in 2012, posting the most A-Sun wins in program history. The Spartans return eight letterwinners and four starters from last year's squad, including junior Kayla McAvoy (Boiling Springs, S.C.), who led the team with 345 kills, a .299 kill percentage, 74 total blocks and 397.0 points. Sophomore Kayla Eversgerd (Breese, Ill.) ranked second on the team with 307 kills and 342.0 points, while topping the Spartans with 33 aces. Sophomore Lexi Gober (Edwardsville, Ill.) led the Spartans with 650 assists and 485 digs, while Morgan Page (Woodstock, Ga.) ranked second with 314 digs.
Upstate welcomes three newcomers to the squad in 2013, all of whom are expected to contribute. Joining the Spartans are Kelsey Bagwell (Jr., Spartanburg, S.C.), who transferred to Upstate after playing her first two seasons at Wofford, and freshmen Emily Koelling (Bartelso, Ill.) and Alexa Lagaly (Greenville, S.C.).
Upstate will return home after the Western Carolina Invitational to host the two-day Hampton Inn & Suites Spartan Classic Sept. 6-7, playing Wofford and Georgia State in the Hodge Center.
