Spartanburg, S.C. – Ten home matches and non-conference competition against some of the region's best teams highlight the 2015 USC Upstate men's tennis spring schedule, it was announced Tuesday by head coach Oliver Trittenwein.
Upstate opens the season with a seven-match road trip that will see the Spartans take on Furman (Jan. 21), UNC Wilmington (Jan. 30) and Coastal Carolina (Jan. 31) in the opening month of the season. Upstate then heads west to Albuquerque, N.M., for a round-robin tournament that will pit the Spartans against UTEP (Feb. 6), Grand Canyon University (Feb. 6) and host New Mexico (Feb. 7). The Spartans end the road trip against in-state rival Presbyterian (Feb. 12).
The Spartans then play eight of their next nine matches at home, beginning with the home opener against UNC Greensboro (Feb. 14). Following a road match at Elon (Feb. 20), Upstate returns to the USC Upstate Tennis Complex to host Charlotte (Feb. 27) to begin a stretch of seven straight home matches. The Spartans will also face Longwood (March 3), Wofford (March 5), Gardner-Webb (March 14) and Lamar (March 17) before opening A-Sun play against Stetson (March 19) and Florida Gulf Coast (March 21).
"We have one of the best and toughest home schedules since I began coaching here," Trittenwein said. "We start the season with tough road matches against some traditional powerhouse programs like Furman, Coastal Carolina and UNC Wilmington before traveling to New Mexico to face nationally recognized teams in UTEP and New Mexico.
"We believe the talent level on our team this season will give us a great opportunity to shake up these top level teams in their respective conferences," Trittenwein added. "The idea behind such a challenging non-conference schedule was to put our team in position to make a run at the Atlantic Sun regular season championship."
Upstate heads back on the road for conference matches at North Florida (March 28), Lipscomb (April 2) and Northern Kentucky (April 4) sandwiched in between a non-conference match at Georgia Southern (March 29).
The regular season comes to a close with home matches against former A-Sun member ETSU (April 10) and Kennesaw State (April 11). The conference tournament is scheduled for April 17-19 in Jacksonville, Fla., and will be played at North Florida's UNF Tennis Complex.
