Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team secured its first victory of the season following its 5-2 defeat of in-state foe Presbyterian Saturday morning from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Upstate got off to a great start in doubles action when Taylor Cohen and Anna Zoske defeated Caroline Ferrari and Caroline deLoach 8-4 from the No. 2 position. Presbyterian responded by winning the final two doubles matches to earn the point and take a 1-0 lead.
Cohen grabbed the first point of the morning for the Spartans following her 6-0, 6-0 singles win over Ferrari at No. 2 to even the score 1-1. Isabel von Stryk put Upstate ahead 2-1 with her 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Greer Ransom at No. 1.
Zoske gave Upstate its third consecutive win and a 3-1 lead in the process when she bested Patricia Alves 6-2, 6-0 from the No. 3 position. Sarah Vande Berg clinched the match for Upstate after she downed deLoach 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4. Newcomer Lindsey Buenger collected her first career Upstate victory in a dual match when she defeated Lucia Leahy 5-7, 6-4, 15-13 at No. 5.
Upstate returns to the court Feb. 8 when the Spartans travel to Buies Creek, N.C., to take on Campbell from the James Nisbet Tennis Center.
