Spartans Set To Open Fall Season Friday At Elon

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team raises the curtain on its 2013 fall campaign when the Spartans travel to Elon, N.C., to take part in the Elon Invitational from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The four-day tournament will kickoff Friday, Sept. 13 and will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 15.

Upstate enjoyed a great deal of success last season at the Elon Invitational and senior Taylor Cohen (Duluth, Ga.) will be looking to defend her singles titles from a season ago. Cohen stormed through the bracket to reach the championship, dropping the first set 4-6 before rallying with a 6-2 victory in the second set and a 6-3 win in the third and decisive set to eliminate Elon's Maria Camara and capture the crown.

Cohen also tasted victory in doubles competition as well, as her and former Spartan Julie Bell cruised to an 8-1 victory over the Elon duo of Briana Berne and Taylor Casey en route to the title. Overall, Cohen posted a 7-0 mark in singles and doubles competition in her debut in a Spartan uniform.

Cohen leads a quartet of returnees that will look to lead the way for head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein , who begins his fourth season at the helm of the Spartans. Fellow senior Talia Rojas (Lima, Peru), junior Isabel von Stryk (Holm, Germany) and sophomore Sarah Vande Berg (Zephyrhills, Fla.) will look to build on the success from last season that saw the Spartans post a 14-8 overall record and a 5-3 mark inside the Atlantic Sun.

Junior Lindsey Buenger (Shawnee, Kan.) joins the Spartans after transferring from Midwestern State, while freshmen Ana Baron (Brusque, Brazil) and Anna Zoshe (Duesseldorf, Germany) round out the trio of Spartan newcomers.

Following competition at Elon, the Spartans return home next weekend to host the annual USC Upstate Fall Classic (Sept. 20-22) before opening the month of October with a trip to Clemson, S.C., to take part in the Clemson Invitational (Oct. 4-6). Upstate puts the finishing touches on the fall season with competition at the ITA Regionals (Oct. 16-20) and the Charlotte Invitational (Oct. 25-27).
