Upstate Heads to East Tennessee State on Tuesday for Non-Conference Finale

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team is slated to play its final non-conference games of the season on Tuesday evening when it travels to Johnson City, Tenn. for a doubleheader against the East Tennessee State Buccaneers beginning at 4 p.m. from Betty Basler Field.

Upstate (36-10, 9-3 ASUN) is coming off a three-game series sweep at home of Stetson last weekend and has won six of its last seven games dating back to April 8. Holly McKinnon compiled a 2-0 record with a 0.55 ERA and one save against Stetson and had one complete game shutout. Offensively, Kendsey Chappelear compiled a .571 average at the plate, while Abbie Millete hit two home runs and Ryan Rector drove in five runs.

The three-game sweep of Stetson is the second this season for the Spartans against a conference opponent. Upstate won all three games at Florida Gulf Coast on April 8-9.

The Spartans currently have the best pitching staff in the ASUN this season, and sixth nationally, boasting a 1.36 team earned run average, and are second with 327 strikeouts and 7.39 strikeouts per seven innings. Kristen Wright leads the team offensively with a .348 average, and Karla Beasley has seven home runs and 34 RBI. Abbie Millete is also tied for the team-lead in home runs with seven. McKinnon is 19-6 with a 1.16 ERA and Lexi Shubert is 16-4 overall to go with a 1.62 ERA.

East Tennessee State (20-19, 6-3 SoCon) has won 11 of its last 12 home games after sweeping Chattanooga in three games last weekend. The Buccaneers are led offensively by Tiffany Laughren with a .395 average, while Danielle Knoetze and Taylor Carter have hit eight home runs each and Carter has 30 RBI. On the mound, Madison Ogle is 9-9 with a 3.25 ERA. ETSU is under the direction of sixth-year head coach Brad Irwin.

The Spartans are 16-4 all-time against East Tennessee State in a series that dates back to the 2008 season. Upstate has won seven in a row in the series and 15 of the last 17 meetings. The Spartans swept the Buccaneers in a doubleheader last season at Cyrill Stadium.
