Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team returns to Cyrill Stadium this weekend as it is set to play host to the eight-team USC Upstate/Furman Classic beginning Friday afternoon and going until Sunday.

Upstate (4-2) is slated to play five games over the course of the weekend beginning Friday against Campbell (2 p.m.) and Iona (4 p.m.). The Spartans will then play twice on Saturday versus Georgetown (1 p.m.) and Colgate (5 p.m.), before concluding weekend play Sunday at 1 p.m. against Presbyterian College.

Upstate won four of its six games last week earning victories over Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern. The Spartans began their season with a doubleheader sweep of Gardner-Webb before defeating Charleston Southern twice in two days at the Wingate by Wyndham Invitational. Abbie Millete led Upstate offensively with a .389 average and two home runs, while Brittany Case drove in a team-leading five RBI. On the mound, Lexi Shubert and Holly McKinnon each picked up two victories, and combined for 50 strikeouts while limiting opponents to a .130 average at the plate.

For her performance in three starts last week, Shubert was named the ASUN Pitcher of the Week for the sixth time in her career on Monday. Shubert compiled a 1.56 ERA and tossed a complete game shutout of Gardner-Webb to open the season. She pitched three straight complete games and gave up one run or less in two of her three starts. Shubert closed out the week by holding 17th-ranked Missouri to only one hit to go with five strikeouts in a 1-0 loss.

Campbell enters the weekend with a 3-2 overall record while Presbyterian College sits at 1-5 on the season. Georgetown is 0-5 to begin the year. Iona and Colgate will be opening its 2017 season this weekend.
