Spartanburg, S.C. – The 21st-ranked USC Upstate softball team will begin the defense of its A-Sun Tournament championship when it hits the field at Draper Diamond for its first game of the 2014 A-Sun Championship Thursday at 12:30 p.m. CT, 1:30 p.m. ET against the winner of the first round game between #4 Mercer and #5 Kennesaw State.
The A-Sun Championship is being hosted by Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn., Wednesday through Saturday. Two games will be played on Wednesday with Mercer and Kennesaw State battling it out, while #3 Stetson takes on #6 Florida Gulf Coast. As regular season champions, Upstate is the #1 seed for the tournament and has a first round bye, as does #2 Lipscomb.
Upstate enters the tournament with a 44-5 record and won the A-Sun with a 22-2 mark in league play. The Spartans are 10-2 against the other five teams in the tournament, sweeping all but one league series on the year. It marks the first time since joining the conference in 2008 that the Spartans have earned the #1 seed.
