Montgomery, Ala. – Aaliyah Lewis scored an unassisted goal in the 13th minute and Kylee Hathaway made three saves to lead Alabama State to a 1-0 victory over the USC Upstate women's soccer team Friday evening from the ASU Soccer Complex.
Lewis collected her second goal of the season following a run down the field that left her even with the Upstate back line when she received a pass from the right wing. Lewis controlled the ball in stride and was able to finish the breakaway opportunity to help the Hornets secure their second win of the season.
"I am disappointed with the loss because I felt that we fought hard and deserved better," USC Upstate head coach Abby Minihan said. "We have yet to learn how to play intense soccer for two halves. Once we find a way to do that, we will start winning games."
The Spartans fired seven shots in the second half in an attempt to net the equalizer, but Hathaway made all three of her saves in the second half to preserve the shutout. Overall, Upstate held an 8-6 edge in shots and a 7-0 advantage in the second half.
Upstate returns to action Sunday at 2 p.m. when the Spartans welcome in-state rival Presbyterian to County University Stadium.
