Spartans Suffer Setback at Florida Gulf Coast
Fort Myers, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast scored four first half goals and added three more in the second half on its way to a 7-0 victory over USC Upstate Sunday afternoon from the Florida Gulf Coast Soccer Complex.
With the loss, USC Upstate falls to 3-8-3 overall and 0-4-1 in Atlantic Sun play, while Florida Gulf Coast improves to 10-3-2 overall and 4-0-1 in league action.
Florida Gulf Coast freshman forward Tabitha Tindell scored the game-winning goal in the 11th minute and collected her eighth goal of the season in the process. Tindell received a through ball from Kayley Clay and took a few dribbles before sending a shot into the upper corner of the Upstate goal. Tindell would later score her second goal of the game in the 75th minute.
Shannen Wacker also scored a pair of goals for the Eagles, collecting her first goal in the 23rd minute off an assist from Paulina Speckmaier and her second goal under four minutes later in the 27th minute following a pass from Shea Rhoney.
Ashley Parks (37th minute), Clay (68th minute) and Kaila Browne (90th minute) also added goals for Florida Gulf Coast.
Upstate senior keeper Sarah Plantz tallied a career-high 15 saves to surpass her previous career-high of 13 she collected at ETSU during the 2011 season. Her 15 saves are also the most by any keeper in the Atlantic Sun this season.
Upstate returns to the pitch Friday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans host Jacksonville from County University Soccer Stadium.
