For the Sandburg girls soccer players, there were tears, smiles, hugs, thankfulness and promises to "always stay in touch" in the late hours of their Saturday night experience in Naperville.

"After the championship game, we put on some dry clothes and had some pizza," said junior Carson Moesle, whose Eagles team finished with a 23-2-1 record after dropping a 3-0 decision to Waubonsie Valley in the Class 3A state final showdown played in the rain at North Central College.

"It is very sad thinking about how this team won't be together anymore. We worked so hard, had so much fun and became such close friends. Our last high school game together was very emotional.

"I will miss the graduating seniors. We're going to hang out together this summer and then when school starts, we'll stay in touch with them, whether it's by Facebook, texting or e-mail."

For junior goalie Victoria Kappel and senior defender Erika Kotterer, their emotional roller coaster state weekend included a very scary moment four hours before Friday night's 4-2 semifinal win over St. Charles North.
