USC Upstate Stays in State for Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's golf team remains in the state of South Carolina for its second tournament of the spring as the Spartans head to Kiawah Island, S.C. Sunday through Tuesday for the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

Tabbed as the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country, the 2018 edition of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic has 42 participating teams and will be played for the fourth time in its history at Osprey Point at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

Two courses are used for the three-day, 54-hole tournament including Oak Point. After 36 holes of play, the top 22 teams will play for the championship at Osprey Point during the final round, while teams 23-42 will play for a flight championship at Oak Point.

USC Upstate is sending out a five-player lineup consisting of Pan Paksanont, Anna Chanthaphaeng, Payton Culler, Sidney Dermody and Brooke Hutto.

The Spartans are back on the course for the second straight week after opening their spring schedule Feb. 19-20 at the Amelia Island Collegiate. USC Upstate finished in 13th place and was led individually by Dermody who placed in a tie for 29th position. The Spartans finished the tournament with a 3.43 stroke average in par 3 scoring, 4.39 stroke average in par 4 scoring and 5.33 stroke average in par 5 scoring. Dermody tallied a team-leading even-par 3.00 stroke average in par 3 scoring and 5.25 stroke average in par 5 scoring, and tied for the team-lead with 33 pars.

The Spartans are off until March 17-18 at the Low Country Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.
