Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate women's golfers Malika Allie and Rachel Reiling not only led the Spartans on the course last year, they also were leaders in the classroom as well and have earned All-American Scholar honors from the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) for the second straight year.
Allie, a rising junior, and Reiling, a rising senior, have excelled in the classroom throughout their entire careers. Both played in every one of Upstate's tournaments in 2013-14 as well and balanced the time needed for the studies with the time needed to compete in college athletics.
"Malika and Rachel have done an outstanding job in the classroom and work hard on the course," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "Both played in every tournament for us while doing so well academically. They are our returning leaders for this upcoming season and that is exciting."
Allie is a Business Administration major and carries a 3.975 cumulative GPA. She played in all 10 tournaments for Upstate last year and owned one of the top scoring averages on the team. She garnered the team's only Top 5 individual finish of the season by claiming second at the EKU Colonel Classic hosted by Eastern Kentucky in April. She shot the low round of the season for the Spartans, a 73 in the Pinehurst Challenge, and claimed four Top 25 individual efforts.
Reiling is a Physical Education – Exercise and Sport Science major and carries a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA. She also played in all 10 tournaments for Upstate and finished the season by leading the Spartans in stroke average. She claimed three Top 20 individual finishes on the year.
The WGCA named 664 women's college golfers throughout NCAA Division I, II and III as All-American Scholars. The criteria for selection are one of the most stringent with honorees having to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.50. Allie and Reiling also earned All-American Scholar honors last year.
