Converse Game Notes
Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team will entertain the Converse College Valkryies in its home opener at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon inside the Hodge Center.
The Spartans are coming off an 87-83 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore Friday night in their season opener. Upstate was led by three newcomers offensively highlighted by Sharmayne Edwards' game-high 24 points. She was one of three Spartans to score in double-figures along with Alex Stanford's 15 points and Raven Jefferson's 14. Shelby Hicks just missed a double-double as she finished with nine points and nine rebounds.
Upstate heads into the matchup with a 28-10 all-time record in home openers. The Spartans have won four of their last five openers at home including an 83-26 victory over St. Andrews last season.
Converse, who plays in Conference Carolinas, is under the direction of second-year head coach Kaye Waldrep. The Valkyries went 0-26 last season and 0-21 in conference play. Converse's roster is made up of two seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and eight freshmen.
The all-time series with the Valkyries began during the 1975-76 season. Upstate leads the all-time series over Converse 28-4 and 15-2 at home. The Spartans have won the last 17 meetings in the series dating back to 1989-90. The two teams last met on the hardwood in 2006-07 in which Upstate walked away with an 80-50 victory.

The Spartans hit the road for back-to-back midweek games beginning Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. against the High Point Panthers.
