NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team (0-3) dropped an 88-42 decision to Vanderbilt (3-0) tonight in Music City.
The Spartans kept it close during the first 10 minutes, trailing by three (14-11) when the Commodores went on a 21-0 run as they jumped ahead 35-11. Vanderbilt took a 42-16 led into the locker room at the half. Upstate did 10 points better in the second half, putting up 26 points compared to Vandy's 46, resulting in the 88-42 final.
Upstate was led by junior Hannah Ohl (Danville, Ill.) with 13 points, including three baskets from behind the arc. She also snagged three defensive rebounds and dished out three assists. Junior Tee'Ara Copney (Asheville, N.C.) registered her third double-digit scoring outing, adding 10 points for the Spartans to go along with one block, one assist and one rebound.
Freshman Shelby Hicks (Greeneville, Tenn.) and junior Lauren McRoberts (Carmel, Ind.) each recorded a team-high five boards for Upstate. McRoberts tallied six points, while Hicks put up three. Freshman Paulina Zaveckaite (Gainesville, Fla.) contributed two points, three rebounds and one steal, while sophomore Kim Roach (Columbia, S.C.) had two points, two boards and one steal.
The Commodores were led by 15 points from Kady Schrann and a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds from Stephanie Holzer. Tiffany Clarke had 11 points, while Jasmine Lister and Clair Watkins each recorded 10 points. Watkins had a team-high three blocked shots. Maggie Morrison handed out nine assists for Vandy, while Lister added seven.
The Spartans were perfect from the free throw line, going 9-for-9, while Vanderbilt was 10-for-14 (71.4 percent). The Commodores out-rebounded Upstate 51-23. Upstate had 19 turnovers, while Vandy handed the ball over 12 times. The Spartans shot 26.4 percent from the floor, compared to the Commodores' 52.1 percent.
This was the first meeting between the two schools. Vanderbilt started the season receiving votes in the Preseason AP Top 25 Poll and the Preseason ESPN/USA Today Poll.
The 0-3 start marks the first time the Spartans have dropped their first three contests of the season since the 2001-02 campaign, when they started the year 0-7. That season Upstate opened the season with a 72-67 loss to North Greenville Nov. 16, 2001. In the season-opener last week, the Spartans dropped a 75-57 decision to the Crusaders at the Hodge Center Nov. 11. This is the first time under head coach Tammy George that the Spartans have posted a 0-3 record to start the season.
