Upstate Set for Two Matches this Week with Texas Rio Grande Valley, Davidson

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team, after spending the last four matches on the road, returns home on Thursday afternoon to face Texas Rio Grande Valley at 2 p.m. before traveling to Davidson on Friday for a 3:30 p.m. match.

Upstate (3-9) closed out its road trip last Friday by dropping a close 4-3 contest against the Lamar Cardinals in Mobile, Ala., while also falling 7-0 at South Alabama on March 8. Against Lamar, the Spartans registered three singles victories from Lenhard Haupt, Fernando Bernardes and Ignacio Garrido. Haupt and Felix Ewers saw their No. 3 doubles match go unfinished with the score tied at 6-6.

Garrido and Francisco Neto both lead Upstate in singles competition this season with six victories as Garrido plays primarily at No. 6 singles and Neto at No. 5. In doubles play, Bernardes and Garrido are 6-3 highlighted by four wins coming at No. 2 doubles.

Texas Rio Grande Valley enters the match with a 2-14 overall record after falling 7-0 on March 7 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Vaqueros face Wofford this afternoon prior to tomorrow's match. Texas Rio Grande Valley has earned wins this season over Prairie View A&M and St. Edward's.

Davidson currently sits at 11-4 on the season following a 7-0 victory against Saint Joseph's on Sunday in A-10 play. The Wildcats have won back-to-back matches over Saint Joseph's and Bethune-Cookman, and four of their last six adding victories against Presbyterian College and Radford.

The Spartans open ASUN play on Wednesday, March 22 at Kennesaw State with match time scheduled for 2 p.m.
