Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's soccer team will travel to Johnson City, Tenn., Wednesday night at 7:00 to face East Tennessee State in a crucial game as teams battle for a spot in next month's A-Sun Tournament.
Three teams - Florida Gulf Coast, ETSU and Lipscomb - have already clinched a spot in the A-Sun Tournament with the other three positions up for grabs. Stetson is currently in the fourth position with seven points, while Jacksonville is in the fifth spot with six. Three teams - Upstate, Mercer and North Florida - are tied for the final position with four points each. The three teams have all beaten each other, so adding points in the remainder of the matches will be key in securing a berth in the A-Sun Tournament. The Spartans will close out the season at home on Nov. 9 against Northern Kentucky, a team tied for first with FGCU with 13 points. However, the Norse are ineligible for a spot in the tournament during their transition period in Division I.
Upstate is 0-3-2 all-time against ETSU. The series dates back to 2008, the first season of soccer for the Buccaneers. Upstate recorded a tie in the first match, dropped the next three, and tied ETSU last year.
