Spartanburg, S.C. – After finishing in a tie for second and leading the team to the championship at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate, USC Upstate standout golfer Ryan Cornfield has been named the A-Sun Golfer of the Week.
Cornfield, a sophomore from Dudley, England, earned the honor after posting rounds of 69, 67 and 73 for a 7-under-par score at the Springhill. He finished tied for second, three strokes behind tournament medalist Carter Davis from Presbyterian. He shared the lead heading into the final round on Tuesday. His performance helped lead the Spartans to the team championship by two strokes over Presbyterian, finishing 12-under as a team over the 54-hole tournament. It marks his first weekly honor from the A-Sun.
"Ryan played confidently this week and showed a lot of composure," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "We needed him to go low and he delivered. He is a great competitor and I am excited for him to win this award."
Cornfield was simply outstanding as a freshman in 2012-13 and finished second on the team with a 75.0 stroke average and two Top 10 finishes in 10 tournaments. He was named the Freshman of the Year at Upstate for his excellence in academics and academics.
