Spartanburg, S.C. – When the 99th Carolinas Amateur Championship gets underway Thursday at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, S.C., USC Upstate men's golf will be well represented as standout Adam Goins and two incoming Spartans, Taylor White and Andrew Purcell, will hit the links to vie for the title.
Goins, from Gaffney and a rising senior at Upstate, earned a spot in the Carolinas Amateur by winning the South Carolina Match Play Championship last month. It was his first Carolinas Golf Association championship. He followed that performance with a second place effort in the Festival of Flowers tournament two weeks ago.
Goins has already written his name in the Upstate record books and looks to close out a successful summer of amateur golf before leading the Spartans in his final season in 2013-14. He ranks second behind all-time great Josh Gallman in nearly every category in the Upstate record books, standing second with three individual tournament titles, a 74.19 stroke average and is tied with five other Spartans with the lowest round in program history, a 66.
Joining Goins in the Carolinas Amateur starting Thursday are Upstate signees White and Purcell, who will begin their Spartan careers this fall. White, from Duncan and a graduate of Byrnes High School, and Purcell, from Salisbury, N.C., and Carson High School, earned spots in the tournament during local qualifying. White was the Spartanburg Herald-Journal Area Player of the Year, while Purcell was the North Piedmont Conference Player of the Year.
The Carolinas Amateur is being played at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island. The course was the site of the 2012 PGA Championship and a former host site of the Ryder Cup. Goins has made two appearances at the course, playing in the Invitational at the Ocean Course hosted by the College of Charleston in the fall of 2011 and 2012. The course plays at 7,066 yards and is a par-72 layout.
The tournament participants will compete in stroke play through 72 holes with a cut to the top 60 players and ties after 36 holes. White tees off at 8:50 a.m., Purcell starts at 9:00 and Goins tees off at 1:45 p.m.
