Spartan Quartet Named to College Sports Madness Preseason All-Conference Team
Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's basketball team was well represented on the 2013-14 College Sports Madness preseason all-conference team, as Torrey Craig, Ty Greene, Ricardo Glenn and head coach Eddie Payne all earned the distinction from the national publication.
Craig was tabbed as the preseason A-Sun Player of the Year and a member of the first team following a season in which he averaged 17.2 points per game to become just the second player in league history to win back-to-back scoring titles. Craig also added 6.9 rebounds, 63 assists and 25 blocked shots en route to earning a unanimous spot on the All-A-Sun first team. In addition, Craig ended the season with seven double-doubles and turned in 10 games in which he scored at least 20 points, including a career-high 31 points in leading Upstate to a win over UTSA.
A 28-year veteran of collegiate coaching, Payne was selected as the preseason A-Sun Coach of the Year. Last season, Payne led the Spartans to their first-ever Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament victory following a 76-62 win over Jacksonville in the opening round. During the 2011-12 season, Payne guided the Spartans to a 13-5 record in league play and was named the Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year and was the recipient of the Hugh Durham Award. Along the way, Payne secured his 400th career victory when the Spartans defeated Stetson 90-72.
Greene was picked to the preseason second team on the heels of a sophomore season that saw him rank sixth in the A-Sun with 76 three-pointers to go along with a .362 percentage from beyond the arc. The 2011-12 A-Sun Freshman of the Year, Greene also ranked fifth in the conference with 1.5 steals per game and 13th with 2.5 assists per game. The Knoxville, Tenn., native stood 15th in the league with 12.6 points per game and poured in a career-high 24 points in a win over Jacksonville.
One of the top forces in the post in 2012-13, Glenn was named to the preseason third team after ranking second in the conference last year with 8.1 rebounds per game. He finished the season with five double-doubles and featured nine games in which he tallied at least 10 rebounds. Glenn also led the Atlantic Sun with a .588 field goal percentage and shot at least 62.5 percent from the field in 17 games. Additionally, Glenn put together a four-game stretch where he shot 76.7 percent from the field.
