NORFOLK, Va. – Adrian Rodgers (Alpharetta, Ga.) tied Sunday's contest at 45 with 7:18 to play but Old Dominion closed the game on a 20-11 run to claim a 65-56 win in the Second Round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
"We didn't shoot the ball well today and Old Dominion's zone seemed to really hurt us," said head coach Eddie Payne. "We are a young club with mostly freshman and sophomores and I am proud of the effort of our players this season."
Upstate (21-13) found itself in a 31-19 hole at intermission but came out on fire in the second half as the Spartans trimmed the deficit to just two (31-29) with 16:59 to play. Four different Spartans scored during the 10-0 run.
Old Dominion (22-13) pushed the lead to eight (40-32) with 13:47 to play before the Spartans made another surge.
The Spartans used a 13-5 run to tie the contest at 45-all with just over seven minutes remaining. Rodgers led the Spartan spurt with a pair of jumpers.
Old Dominion quickly regained the lead and didn't relinquish it down the stretch, leading by as many as 10 before claiming a nine-point win.
Ricardo Glenn (Augusta, Ga.) led the Spartans with a double-double at 12 points and 16 rebounds. Ty Greene (Knoxville, Tenn.) reached double figures with 12 points while tallying five assists and two steals.
Kent Bazemore paced the Monarchs with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Upstate finished the game 33.3% from the floor (20-60), 23.1% from beyond the arc (6-26) and 55.6% at the line (10-18). Meanwhile, Old Dominion finished at 38.5% (FG), 22.2% (3FG) and 63.6% (FT).
During the opening minutes of the first half, the Spartans and the Monarchs battled back and forth as there were four ties and two lead changes. The Spartans largest lead was four (9-5) with 14 minutes remaining in the opening half.
The Spartans, whose season came to a close Sunday, will return 11 of 13 players that suited up this season including A-Sun Player of the Year, Torrey Craig (Great Falls, S.C.) and A-Sun Rookie of the Year, Ty Greene.
