Spartanburg, S.C. – Rafael Amanau finished a triple short of the cycle as the La Salle Explorers defeated USC Upstate 8-1 in a non-conference game at Harley Park on Thursday.

La Salle improves to 2-12 while Upstate drops to 7-9.

Scoring Breakdown

  • Top 1st – Amanau reached on a double and scored on a Kevin McGowan single to get the Explorers on the board.
  • Top 5th – Brett Simon led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly.
  • Top 6th – McGowan reached on a single to start the inning and scored on a Ben Faso two-run home run. Chase Arnold reached on a triple and scored on a Zach Wright single. Wright scored on a Simon single.
  • Top 8th – Wright reached on a one-out double and scored on a Brian Tagoe single.
  • Bottom 8thCharlie Carpenter hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season.
  • Top 9th – Amanau hit a solo home run.


  • Drake Harris went 2-for-4 with a single and double to lead the Spartans.
  • Carpenter, J.J. Shimko, Brendan Brundage and Hunter Gilbert each had a hit.
  • Amanau finished 3-for-4 with a single, double, home run, two runs scored and two RBI.
  • McGowan, Faso and Simon each had two hits for La Salle.
  • Luke Reilly (1-1) earned the win, allowing one run on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts in 8.0 innings.
  • Conner Campbell (1-1) took the loss after he allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
