Roseboom Hurls Complete Game; Upstate Evens Series with Lipscomb
Spartanburg, S.C. – David Roseboom pitched his first career complete game to lead USC Upstate to a 6-3 victory over Lipscomb Saturday afternoon in game two of a three-game series from Harley Park.
Roseboom (2-4) allowed just three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out six to move into a tie for third place all-time at Upstate with 18 career wins.
Hunter Brothers (0-1) took the loss after surrendering three runs on five hits to go along with five walks in 4.1 innings of work.
Lipscomb (17-11, 6-2) scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI groundout from right fielder Drew Adams. Grant Massey tripled to left-center field with one out and came home to score when Adams grounded out to shortstop.
Upstate (10-18, 2-6) took its first lead of the game in the bottom half of the fourth inning to open up a 2-1 advantage. Catcher Luke Weber drew a walk to open the frame and came around to score on a double to left from Stephen Dowling. After a sacrifice bunt from Daniel Fickas move Dowling to third, Justin Allen delivered a single past the drawn in infield to plate Dowling.
The Spartans tacked on another run in the fifth inning when Dowling drew a bases loaded walk to force in Erik Samples and pick up his second RBI of the game in the process. Samples added his team-leading 11th double of the season in the bottom of the sixth to score Tyler Lesch from first to put Upstate ahead 4-1. Samples finished with a game-high three hits to tie his career-high he set earlier in the year in a win against Kentucky.
Lesch delivered an RBI double in the eighth inning to score shortstop Dylan Woods, who reached on a one-out single up the middle. Lesch came around to score later in the inning on a throwing error by Massey.
Lipscomb mounted a rally in the ninth inning and received a double from Tyler Bethune, a single from Jonathan Allison and a walk to Massey to load the bases to start the frame. Adams followed with an RBI on a fielder's choice to score Bethune, and Allison also scored on the play on an errant throw on the Spartan infield to pull the Bisons within 6-2. Roseboom answered by striking out Tyson Ashcraft and Austin Sistrunk to end the game and preserve the victory for the Spartans.
Upstate and Lipscomb will play the rubber game Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. from Harley Park.
