Upstate Welcomes Florida Gulf Coast for Weekend Series

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team opens a seven-game homestand Friday night at 6 p.m. when the Spartans welcome Florida Gulf Coast to Harley Park for game one of a three-game series.

Upstate and Florida Gulf Coast will continue the series Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at noon. Spartan right-hander Zac Manuppelli (3-1, 6.05) draws the pitching assignment in game one and will face Eagle right-hander Michael Murray (4-0, 0.25).

Upstate (9-13, 1-2) enters the weekend coming of a three-game series at North Florida in the first Atlantic Sun Conference action of the season. Upstate won game one before dropping games two and three, falling in heartbreaking fashion in the rubber game via a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Spartan freshman first baseman Zach Krider hit .571during the series at UNF and knocked in five runs and hit his second home run of the season. Krider is now second in the conference with 33 hits, seventh with 19 RBIs and ninth with a .351 batting average. The Longwood, Fla., native is also tops on the team with 12 multi-hit games and is riding a six-game hitting streak.

Junior Erik Samples collected three doubles during the series and is now tied for first in the A-Sun with nine. In addition, Samples is tied for eighth in the conference with 18 RBIs and tied for third with three wins on the mound.

Florida Gulf Coast (13-8, 0-0) saw its seven-game winning streak snapped Wednesday with a 5-2 loss in 10 innings to Miami (FL). The Eagles are 3-2 on the road, but not have played away from Swanson Stadium since March 1 at Florida.

Jake Noll leads the Florida Gulf Coast offense with a .391 batting average to go along with 11 RBIs and six doubles. Nick Rivera and Michael Suchy share the team lead with 13 RBIs.

Florida Gulf Coast is 11-7 all-time against USC Upstate and 5-4 at Harley Park. The Spartans, however, have won two of the last three series against the Eagles.
