Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team plays a pair of midweek road games when the Spartans take on Furman Tuesday at 5 p.m. from Fluor Field and Gardner-Webb Wednesday at 5 p.m. from Moss Stadium.
Upstate freshman right-hander Eric Birklund will take on Furman righty Matthew Quarles on Tuesday.
Upstate (5-7) enters the week coming off a three-game series against Northeast Conference foe Bryant. The Spartans dropped two of three to the Bulldogs, but still rank fifth in the conference in batting average, fourth in runs scored, fourth in RBIs and third in hits.
Spartan right fielder Tyler Lesch leads Upstate on offense and ranks sixth in the league with a .367 batting average, 10th with a .510 slugging percentage and is tied for fourth with 18 hits. Second baseman Erik Samples stands tied for sixth with 11 runs scored and is tied for third in the league with 11 RBIs. Zach Krider is tied with Samples with 11 runs driven in.
On defense, senior catcher Luke Weber leads the A-Sun with 11 runners caught stealing.
Furman won two of three games over the weekend and improved to 5-6 this season. Senior first baseman Greg Harrison leads the team with a .364 batting average and nine RBIs. Upstate and Furman are tied 6-6 in the all-time series between the two teams.
Gardner-Webb has lost its last four games and owns a 3-8 record following weekend losses to High Point, Saint Joseph's and Elon. Bulldog senior Scott Coleman features a team-best .319 batting average and a team-high nine RBIs. Gardner-Webb leads the all-time series with Upstate 20-18.
