SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team posted a 4-0 mark last week and the perfect mark earned the club national recognition as they were selected as a Honorable Mention National Team of the Week by College Baseball Insider.
Upstate (29-12, 13-5 Atlantic Sun) opened the week with a 9-6 victory at North Carolina A&T (Apr. 17). Greg Guers (Langhorne, Pa.) led the Spartans with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with three runs and three RBI. Meanwhile, Chris Cox (Simpsonville, S.C.) earned the win after allowing three runs on five hits in five innings of work to improve to 2-0. Chad Sobotka (Sarasota, Fla.) earned his ninth save of the season by tossing a scoreless ninth.
Brody Greer (Honea Path, S.C.) paced the Spartans with a 3-for-3 effort including a double and his first career homerun as Upstate downed Jacksonville, 3-2, in the series opener (Apr. 20). Greer scored on Gaither Bumgardner's (Fort Lawn, S.C.) walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth to lift Upstate to the victory. Ben Augenstein (Sebastian, Fla.) picked up the win in relief to improve to 2-1 on the season.
In the middle game of the three-game set the Spartans did something rather unique in the 4-2 victory over the Dolphins. Upstate was limited to just one hit (in the fifth), but did all of its damage in the third as a pair of Jacksonville errors allowed four runs to come around to score on one play.
In the finale, Brandon Lee (Palatka, Fla.) notched his fourth complete game of the year to improve to 6-3 after the Spartans struck for 11 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to claimed a 12-4 victory and earn the series sweep of the Dolphins.
