Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate cross country team will travel to Charlottesville, Va. Friday for the 2013 NCAA Southeast Regionals hosted by the University of Virginia.
The event will be held at Panorama Farms with the men running a 10K beginning at 12 p.m. and the women a 6K at 1:15 p.m. This is the first time that the men will run in a 10K race this season and the second time the women have ran a 6K.
"This will definitely be a tough race on Friday," stated associate head coach Carson Blackwelder. "The best teams in the Southeast will be there and we will see where we stack up."
The Spartans are returning to the course for the first time in two weeks after participating at the A-Sun Championships in Nashville, Tenn. At the A-Sun Championships, Upstate finished sixth in the men's race and seventh in the women's competition. Ross Oden and Jasmine Polite both earned Second Team All-Conference honors after finishing inside the top 14. Oden received his second straight Second Team All-Conference recognition following an 11th place finish, while Polite posted a 12th place finish to pick up her first All-Conference accolade.
The Spartan men finished 15th at last season's Southeast Regionals, marking the best finish for Upstate in program history. The women finished in 35th place as four runners recorded personal-best times.
"I believe the hilly course will play to our advantage since we are used to rolling hills on our cross country course," Blackwelder said. "It will be a test of toughness on Friday."
A total of 40 teams are competing on the men's side and 42 for the women. The field consists of 600 runners from universities located throughout the Southeast. Upstate is the only team out of the Atlantic Sun running in the event.
The 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.
