Indianapolis – USC Upstate senior Destinie Sykes has qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Track and Field Championship in the triple jump, it was announced today. The NCAA East Preliminary will be held May 25-27 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.
Sykes is the second female track and field athlete to qualify for the East Preliminary Championship along with Jemeli Sang and first Upstate representative at the regional meet since Gilbert Kemboi, Cameron Thomas and Kenny Sugishita qualified for the East Prelims in 2013.
"This is a big accomplishment for our program," head coach Carson Blackwelder said. "She is only the second female to qualify and our first jumper to qualify on the women or men's side."
Sykes, who is the No. 47 seed in the triple jump, won the ASUN Championship with a school-record mark of 12.56 meters/41' 2.5" last weekend. Sykes was the previous record-holder with a leap of 39-05.25 set at the ASUN Championships in 2015.
"Destinie has improved in all her events this season," Blackwelder stated. "She is not only a triple jumper but also a 100-meter hurdler and 400-meter hurdler. She has seen personal bests in all three of her events this season. The conference meet is where we really saw her step up and not only win the triple jump but run a PR and second-best all-time in the 100-meter hurdles."
The women's triple jump is scheduled for 6 p.m. on May 27. Live results and a live video stream are available via a link on www.upstatespartans.com.
