Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate track and field teams will travel to the University of North Florida this weekend for the 2017 ASUN Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The meet begins with the women's heptathlon at 8:30 a.m. Friday followed by the men's decathlon at 9:15 a.m. Afternoon action begins at 2 p.m. with the women's hammer throw and concludes at 8:55 p.m. with the women's 10,000-meter run. On Saturday, the final events of the decathlon begin at 9 a.m. with the conclusion of the heptathlon to follow. Field event finals begin at 3 p.m. with the women's 4x-100-meter relay begin track activities at 5 p.m.
"We have seen the team improve in many ways this season," head coach Carson Blackwelder said. "They are not only seeing school records and personal bests, but we are seeing smarter racing and better execution in their events.
In their final conference meet tune-up on April 22, the Spartans had five season best and 18 personal best performances along with a pair of school records set by Kennedy Holton. Holton put her name in the record books with the fastest time in the 100-meter hurdles (14.10) and 400-meter hurdles (1:02.21). The Spartans have 15 top-five rankings and 26 top-10 rankings among times and distances submitted to the ASUN this season.
Blackwelder feels that the Spartans are well-suited for success in particular events.
"Our strengths for the men will be the 100-meter and 200-meter dash with Patrick Jamison and the hurdles with Tanner Saunders. Dorian jones is also strong for us in the middle distances. On the women's side, the hurdles are strong as Holton and Destinie Sykes have done a great job this year."
In 2016, the men's team finished in fourth place with 73 points while the women finished in fifth place with 62 points.
