Boone, N.C. – The USC Upstate track and field team posted an impressive performance during its season-opening indoor meet as seven school records were set at the Appalachian Invitational.
The women's team, led by three newcomers, set six school records while the men had one record broken. Both teams finished in third place of the Division I standings.
Freshman KeAndrea Ladson, participating in her first collegiate event, broke the school record in both the high jump and 55-meter hurdles. She finished sixth in the high jump with a mark of 1.65-meters (5-05.00) while placing fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.52. Ladson added a fifth-place finish in the triple jump at 5.27-meters (17-03.50).
The Spartan women also had school records set in the triple jump, shot put, 55-meter dash and 400-meter dash. Freshman Destinie Sykes and junior Alexis Jacobs both made an impact in their first event with Upstate after breaking the school's triple jump and shot put records. Sykes posted the best finish overall for the women as she placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 11.12-meters (36-05.75). Jacobs was sixth in the shot put event following a throw of 13.13-meters (43-01.00).
Sophomores Dominique Nock and Heaven Briggs also set new school marks in the 55-meter dash and 400-meter dash, respectively. Nock finished third in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.27 and Briggs was sixth in the 400-meter dash after posting a time of 59.65.
Nock also collected third-place finishes in the long jump and 200-meter dash. She had a jump of 5.41-meters (17-09.00) in the long jump and a time of 25.59 in the 200-meter dash.
Briggs, along with Draneisha Griffin, Brenicke Johnson and Essence Jackson, all placed inside the top five of their respective events. Briggs was fourth in the 200-meter dash (26.08), Griffin fifth in the long jump (5.27-meters), Johnson fifth in the 55-meter dash (7.35) and Jackson fifth in the 800-meter run (2:27.24).
On the men's side, the Spartans saw the 55-meter dash record broken by freshman Jonathan Jackson. Jackson had a seventh-place finish with a time of 6.56 while adding an eighth place finish in the 200-meter dash after posting a time of 22.79.
Senior Matt Johnson recorded the best finish for the men as he placed second in the 800-meter run on his time of 1:55.43.
Freshman Brandon Goodman collected a fifth-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.89-meters. Senior Joshua Powers earned a sixth-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.01.
Upstate returns to action Jan. 17-18, 2014 at the Niswonger Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.
