Emily Tangwar Koech is the second person affiliated with the women's cross country program, and first affiliated with the women's track and field program, to be inducted into the Upstate Athletics Hall of Fame.
Tangwar, a native of Eldoret, Kenya, competed for the Spartans, both on the course and track, from 2007-10. Along with her sister, and teammate, Joan, Emily concluded her Upstate career as one of the best to ever compete in cross country and track and field.
On the cross country course, Tangwar ranks fourth all-time in school history in the 5K after running a time of 18:08.00 during her freshman season at the 2007 A-Sun Championships. She would go on to finish runner-up at the A-Sun Championships that season, tying her for the second-best finish in school history with Joan. For her performance that season, Tangwar was named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year while also earning A-Sun First Team All-Conference recognition to go with her spot on the All-Freshman Team. Throughout her career, Tangwar was named the A-Sun Runner of the Week three times.
She posted her first career victory at the 2007 Citadel Invitational, and tallied six top-10 finishes that season. Tangwar would add another individual victory during the 2008 Eye Opener Invitational. Overall, she recorded two wins and compiled 11 top-10 performances during her four-year career.
On the track, Tangwar ranks in the top-10 all-time in 11 different categories on both the indoor and outdoor circuit. Those categories include the 800-meters, mile, 1500-meters, 3000-meters, 5000-meters, 10,000-meters and career points. Tangwar is a three-time A-Sun Indoor Individual Champion in the mile, 3000-meters and 5000-meters, all coming in 2008-09. She also took home top individual honors at the 2009-10 A-Sun Indoor Championships in the 5000-meters.
Tangwar was a four-time First Team All-A-Sun performer throughout her career in the mile, 3000-meters and 5000-meters. She earned three First Team All-Conference honors in 2008-09 and one in 2009-10. Emily was also named Second Team All-Conference in the 3000-meters in 2009-10.
Tangwar graduated from USC Upstate in May of 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, BSN. She also holds a Masters degree in Nursing, MSN, which she received from Gardner-Webb University in 2014.
Presently, she is a Registered Nurse at Central Regional Hospital in Butner, North Carolina. She and her husband, Ezekiel, have two boys: Kipleel and Kipleting Rono.
